Valmo is an expert in Food Product Research and Development, with over thirty years of experience in agro-processing and food technology. He is a distinguished Jamaican scientist, researcher, and thought leader who served as a key figure within the Scientific Research Council (SRC) of Jamaica. At SRC, he held a prominent role as a Team Leader, managing three research scientists and six pilot plant personnel. During his tenure, he oversaw the creation of high-quality products and spear-headed various scientific initiatives aimed at fostering innovation, sustainability, and economic growth in Jamaica. With a career dedicated to advancing scientific innovation, sustainable development, and technological solutions, Valmo has significantly contributed to Jamaica’s scientific landscape, positioning the country as a regional leader in research and development.
Valmo earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal and Poultry Science from Tuskegee University(United States), graduating with honors. He then furthered his studies with a Master of Science in Food Science and Technology from the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (United States). Additionally, he holds a Diploma in Agriculture from the Jamaica School of Agriculture and has completed a number of training courses including Sensory Evaluation, Developing Allergen Prevention Plans, and Statistical Process Control at the Guelph Food Technology Centre.
He is also certified as a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) Food Safety Systems Management Consultant and Trainer. HACCP is recognized in over 150countries including USA, UK and EU.
Key Achievements
- Valmo's work has contributed to the improvement of the Food Product Development Unit and the formulation, reformulation, and standardization of products for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. He has also assisted with the establishment of companies such as Jamaica Broilers Group, Grace Kennedy, Cal’s Manufacturing, Very Amazing Products (VAP) and OJay Koolers.
- Through the SRC’s initiatives, he has designed and implemented training programs and workshops in agro-processing that highlight good manufacturing practices, sensory evaluation, as well as food safety management systems for regional stakeholders in the local and regional agro-industry.
- He has also developed post-harvest methods for the long-term storage of fruits and vegetable enabling the production of value-added products such as sauces and preserves. Additionally, he has been involved in the design and development of factory-processing operations for canned mannish water and other technical applications. Valmo has helped farmers adopt sustainable practices, leading to increased productivity and reduced environmental impact.
- Notably, he has conducted agro-processing workshops funded by the Caribbean Development Bank, training participants across the Caribbean region. He was also instrumental in the coordinating and delivering beverage reformulation workshops initiated by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.
- Valmo is passionate about building Jamaica’s and the Caribbean scientific and technological capacity. He has played a key role in establishing innovation hubs and research labs that provide resources and training for young scientists, entrepreneurs, and innovators. These initiatives aim to drive the Youth Fields of Hope’s progress in the agro-processing field and promote a culture of innovation among the youth.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Valmo is an avid nature enthusiast who enjoys exploring Jamaica’s natural beauty, particularly its rivers and mountains. He is also a family man, dedicated to spending quality time with his wife and children. Valmo’s hobbies include reading scientific literature, hiking, and engaging in community service through his local community center.
