WCM Zaina O’Connor started playing Chess at the age of 6yrs old while attending Alvernia Prepartory School. She took a break from the sport in 2020 during and after the Covid Pandemic, she returned to the Sport in 2024 at age 15 as an outstanding Meadowbrook High School student playing in the inaugural Cayman Islands Chess Championship placing 2nd and 4th in two categories, she also represented Jamaica from August 2-8 , 2024 in El Salvador at the Central American and Caribbean games.
Zaina having won Jamaica's National Age Group Championship in the under 8 (U8) category went on to represent Jamaica in her First International Championship in Panama at the Central American and Caribbean Games. Zaina created history at age 7 winning in her first International Championship the title of "Woman Candidate Master" (WCM) which is used to address her in her field of sport. She also became the youngest in the English speaking Caribbean to received the title WCM.
Since Zaina’s first representation at age 7 in the CAC games in Panama, she has won several National Age Group titles. Zaina has represented Jamaica at the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA), CAC and Pan Am games, in 8 countries across Central America winning Gold, Silver and Bronze medals and Trophies.
Zaina is a conscientious and articulate student who is an A student doing the Sciences with her dreams of becoming a Pediatrician.
She will tell you that Chess is a mind game and it works the brain to perfection. Zaina is an active student in her school community Key Club and Interact Club along with her leadership role as Class monitor are her interest.
